Our Philosophy

We are ardent traditionalists in the Virginia wine industry.

We grow over 95 percent of the grapes we use – meticulously hand tended and managed using the most diligent step-by-step process we can. You will see our primary and largest vineyard as you enter the property, and while you sit out on our patios enjoying our wines. Over the past 18 years we have changed virtually every element of our growing regimes, seeking to find and use methods that work best at our locations – and which we continue to tweak in pursuit of continuous improvement.

Viticulture in Virginia is a complicated business. We battle frosts in the spring, high heat and humidity in the summer, hurricanes in the fall and a range of mildews, rots and other diseases and insect pests all season long. Yes, fall harvest days are our favorite days of the year!

We are proud to give walking tours of both the vineyard and the winery (depending on season). Tours are included with group tastings and Private Events, and are available for individual wine tasters as staff time permits.

Our Philosophy

We are ardent traditionalists in the VA wine industry.

We grow almost all our own grapes – meticulously hand tended and managed using the most diligent step-by-step process we can. Over the past 18 years we have changed virtually every element of our growing regimes, seeking to find and use methods that work best at our location – and we continue to tweak in pursuit of continuous improvement.

We make all our wine on site – all in small batches, including ‘old fashioned’ bin fermentation for our red wines.

A typical wine will consist of just 100-200 cases in a given vintage. Our wines often  sell out in 3 to 6 months, to be followed by the next vintage when it’s ready. We take what nature gives us, and do our best to express the terroir of our rocky, mountain-edge site.

We have been proud to represent the Virginia wine industry in various national tastings, and have received gold medals for both red and white wines in our Governor’s Cup competition.

We give vineyard and winery tours to help everyone get a better understanding of what we do and how we do it.

All our staff are involved in some aspect of our operations – harvesting, bottling, vineyard tasks or winery work – giving them first-hand experience and stories to share too.

We train new growers and winemakers through a PVCC sponsored ‘Adopt a Row’ hands-on viticulture class we teach.

We have had over 150 ‘graduates’ including vineyard managers, winemakers, winery owners, sommeliers and more over the past 10 years. C-ville Weekly has published a feature on our class.

Our friends at Edible Blue Ridge magazine volunteered for a recent harvest. Read their “Will Work for Wine” account here.

We sell almost exclusively at our tasting room.

You won’t find us on grocery store shelves or ABC stores. Our Wine Club gets allocations of each new wine upon release, and the balance is available for sale in our tasting room.

We also ship wines directly to nearly all states using a third party.

To order our wine online, please visit our Current Releases page.

We pursue sustainability throughout all our operations,

whether by using low-impact chemical sprays, composting grape pressings, using solar panels to power our operations, providing TELSA and other electric car charging stations, using corn starch and potato starch cups and utensils rather than plastic, and many other elements.

We are proud to have been repeatedly named Virginia’s Greenest Winery. A full list of our green practices can be found here
